Punkie's Trip to Sweden 2001

I was gone this time for two whole weeks in some of the most georgeous, beautiful land I have ever laid my sorry little walrus eyes on. You just can never truly understand the wonder and beauty of this mysterious place. My trip started in late July, and I returned in early August. And despite some short layovers, gruellingly long flights, and a bad head cold during half my trip, I had the best time overseas that I could have ever hoped for. And I miss Sweden very badly, so even though this is my third trip, I will be back many, many times.

Susann and her son, Axel. Everyone says her having a baby with her sambo Kristar (sambo is a Swedish term for "lives with, might as well be married, but not actually married"; they get the same benefits as married people) was the best thing for her. I don't think there was anything wrong with the old Susann, but I'm sure that's not what they meant :).

Horsey rides with Axel. Susann is a wonderful mother.

This is Kristar and Axel. No, Axel was not named after the Guns'n'Roses singer. Axel is a Swedish name.

Shhh! Karin doesn't know I have a pciture of her. Shhh! She hates being photographed. That's her sitting on the porch. Gunnar (Siv's sambo) sits in the rocking chair as Siv and JonEric talk in the shade.

Gunnar watched JonEric peel potatoes.

Siv making pålt, a traditional dish that is sort of a potato dough dumpling with ham inside. Severed with jam. Very, very wonderful comfort food.

JonEric's pride, a field of his own potatoes. Him and someone else smuggled the potatoes in from Europe many years ago, and not many people in Sweden have or know about this variety. For one, they are "large," but I hated to tell JonEric that I had seen Idaho potatoes many, many times bigger. But these potatoes were also sweet, and very tasty.

The stuff in the nets are Strawberries, and the bushes back there are the sweetest raspberries on Earth. Oh, man, they were delicious.
