Punkie's Trip to Sweden 2001

We went to an "Iron Age" outdoor interactive museum. This was the old house. This was a fascinating place, although I was so engrossed in everything, and talking to everyone, I forgot to take a lot of pictures. Things I got to do: make my own bread, taste cheese being made, try some locally-made first-aid cream (I should have bought some, but I was afraid customs would take it away from me), and see an ancient ironworking forge.

This is what remains of a bottom third of an old iron forge from the 1800s. Normally, this would be taller with a wooden structure on top.

During the Christmas (Jul) season, these "tomtegubbar" (like little elves) go on tour to be seen. This is their summer home.

I peeked inside their house.

When hay or barely is rolled up for use in agriculture, it's kept fresh by a recent invention that was developed in Germany. All the farms are littered with these wrapped bales, called "Tractor eggs" by the locals.

Honestly, this isn't just a lump of dirt, it's a lump of dirt with a dead guy in it. It's an old Viking grave from about 1000-1200 AD. Sven commented this site was really not as well maintained as it should have been, and was going to remind the land owner (a church) to clean it up a bit.

Here we are, on a ferry across the river. It's funny, it's a boat that uses a large cable as a guide to go back and forth.

These are some of my relatives. Right to left are Ebbe, Carin, Henna, Sven, and Siv. Ebbe and Carin are married (Carin from my side), and Henna and Siv are Sven's grandmother and mother, respectively. Henna is 92, and still going strong! She sure doesn't act like a doddering old woman, that's for sure. In fact, she only just recently allowed herself to live in assisted housing, and the cabin she used to live it got named after her (where she used to get lingonberries is now called, "Johenna's Berry Patch"). She is really, really cool.
